Goodbye to a Miramichi Landmark
One thing I’ve maintained over the years is the fact that you can take the girl out the Maritimes but you can’t take the Maritimes out of the girl. My home town will forever be Newcastle, now Miramichi, New Brunswick. To some it may be a small backwater city in northern New Brunswick, but to me it’s home. I was born there, I was married there, and I’ll likely be buried there. I’m like the proverbial Miramichi salmon – I’ll make my way home to the waters of that river no matter what.
So, today, when I got the news that one of the town’s oldest buildings and a landmark that has been around for what feels like forever is gone, it saddened my heart. To those who aren’t from the ‘Chi, it’s just a bar. But to anyone who grew up around the area – it’s The Opera House – a staple of growing up on the river, and now it’s gone.
