Better Than Thou…
Jan. 17th, 2010 07:04 pmIt’s one thing that’s been on my mind lately. I’ve people in my life that really get up my nose with how much better they think they are then the rest of us. In this particular case, it’s on a few levels. Being from the United Kingdom does not make you any better than me being Canadian makes me any better. So, you like only hardcore SciFi, and dismiss out of hand anything else. This makes you any better than the rest of us who have wide ranging, or simply different tastes, how?
If you have to use something to pull yourself up in life, to shove in someone else’s face that you’re better than they are for whatever reason, you’re less than they are to start. I don’t give a crap if you’re a multi-lettered Doctor from the highest society. If you can’t interface with most people, without snide remarks about how pedantic, pedestrian they all are, then you really can’t interface with anyone can you?
I myself don’t like 99.9% of reality television (I will make exceptions for Canada’s Worst Driver and Canada’s Worst Handiman). Do I crap on people who like Survivor or Big Brother? No. To each their own. We all have our own forms of entertainment. I may not like it, but shoving that in their faces gets me precisely where?
One of my characters is the eldest son of a doctor and a nurse. Oh yes, that on the first level he’s “upper crust”. Dig deeper – his father is a man who was never around his family, who was very much a workaholic, and a raging alcoholic, who when he was with his family was a right asshole. So much for that, eh? Illusions, shattered in a single sentence.
As it should be. Judging others leads nowhere.
